Reporting to the Human Resources Director, the Career Development Specialist (CDS) will establish and maintain activities that train and develop employees at all levels across the agency, providing counseling and guidance in the areas of career development, offering paths to higher education, and search and pursuit of employment opportunities within the agency and externally. The CDS will identify and confirm talents across the agency and find/devise suitable challenges and opportunities for high potential employees. The CDS position was created in response to the Agency's Anti-Racism work. The Career Development Specialist will work with staff individually and collectively to create career paths.


Career Development/Advancement

• Builds effective relationships with staff at all levels

• Serves as an information point for employee career development

• Develops and manages the agency's "Career development center" (describe)

• Develops coaching and mentoring programs to assist employee growth and development

• Coordinates, creates or sources appropriate training opportunities for employees to develop appropriate skills and knowledge to assume positions of greater responsibility within the agency

• Develops and delivers workshops and career-related programs to assist and support employees' efforts to access higher education

• Assess training needs through surveys, interviews with employees, or consultation with directors


Leadership Development

• Identifies resources for leadership development

• Coordinates professional development activities

• In collaboration with senior management identifies and leads succession planning efforts

• Ensure diverse participation in leadership skill building activities, support employee resource and affinity groups, and offer minority employees activities that are relevant to the agency


Support Directors with their Workforce Development Efforts

• Assists with cross training efforts

• Assists directors with on the job training projects and "stretch assignments"

• Assists managers with creating individual career development plans for staff members

• Coordinates communication with directors to ensure the program is meeting objectives

• Develops appropriate coaching and developmental feedback to help directors and managers become more effective and understand their role in enhancing employee growth and development


Build Partnerships with Colleges/Vendors

• Select and assign instructors or vendors to conduct training

• Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with colleges partnering with them to provide on-site degree classes


Monitor Program Performance

• Obtain and use data to drive changes in programs. (in collaboration with Quality

Management Department)

• Perform administrative tasks such as monitoring costs, scheduling classes, setting up systems and equipment, and coordinating enrollment

• Constantly monitors, analyzes and evaluates scope of services offered to ensure effectiveness. Plan and implement new initiatives where necessary

  • Travel is required within the NY metro area and Westchester

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's degree
  • Related experience
